Common shafts, discs, and bearing housings; machining processes.
In the process of mechanical part design, it is not enough to simply… Operational performance of the equipment Take it into account, and also need to… Machining process of the part Take these factors into account, including machining time and manufacturability. When designing parts, mechanical engineers should not merely create the design; they must also consider the manufacturing process.
Machined parts
Next, we will introduce the machining processes for three types of parts.
01
Machining Process for Shaft-Type Parts

To briefly list what we’ll need: Equipment :
❶ Sawing machine for cutting round bars;
❷ External cylindrical and end-face machining is performed on a lathe;
❸ Keyway machining, using a milling machine;
❹ Ultra-precision external cylindrical machining is performed using an external cylindrical grinder.
Next, prepare Process Flow Diagram :
❶Cutting.
The sawing machine cuts round steel to a specified dimension of ∅60×230.
❷Car.
Plane one end face, turn the workpiece over, and plane the other end face, ensuring a total length of 230.
❸Car.
Drill a center hole at one end, then turn the workpiece over and drill a center hole at the other end.
❹ Car.
Turn two steps on the roughing lathe to produce diameters of Ø37 and Ø48, then reverse direction and turn the remaining four steps to obtain diameters of Ø32, Ø37, Ø46, and Ø54.
❺ Heat treatment.
Quenched and tempered, with a hardness of HB 220–240.
❻Pliers.
Machining the center holes at both ends.
❼ Car.
Double‑center chucking: semi‑finish turning of two steps, grooving two 3×0.5 mm slots, and chamfering 3–C1; then reverse‑turning, double‑center chucking, semi‑finish turning of four steps, grooving two 3×0.5 mm slots, and chamfering 4–C1.
❽Milling.
Mill two keyways, with a depth increased by 0.25 mm, for grinding.
❾Pliers.
Drill the top hole of the second component.
❿Grinding.
By grinding the two outer diameters, we obtain Ø35 ± 0.008 and Ø46 ± 0.008; then, after turning, we grind the other two outer diameters to achieve Ø30 ± 0.005 and Ø35 ± 0.008.

Machining Process for Disc-Type Parts
A set of steps; disc-shaped part; material: 45.
Heat treatment requirements: quenching and tempering, with a hardness of HB 220–240.

To briefly list what we’ll need: Equipment :
❶ External cylindrical and end-face machining are performed on a lathe.
❷ Machining of arc-shaped grooves using a milling machine;
❸ Circular through-hole, drilled on a drill press.
Next, prepare Process Flow Diagram :
❶Forging.
Forging the blank.
❷Car.
Clamp the small end on the outer cylindrical surface; perform rough turning to face the end and turn the large outer diameter, achieving a diameter of ∅96.
❸Car.
Turn around, clamp the large end’s outer cylindrical surface, and perform rough turning: face the small outer cylindrical end to achieve a total length of 52, then turn the small outer cylinder to obtain… ∅57, small outer diameter length 31, rough internal bore to ∅33.
❹ Heat treatment.
Quenched and tempered, HB 220–240.
❺Car.
Semi‑finish turning: outer diameter to ∅94, outer length to 20, chamfer C1.
❻ Car.
Turn around, face the large‑end outer diameter, and semi‑finish the small‑end outer diameter: ensure an overall length of 51; semi‑finish the small‑end outer diameter to ∅54, with a length of 31.5; chamfer both the inner bore and the outer diameter to C1.
❼ Car.
Finishing turning: turn the small end face to ensure an overall length of 50.5; bore the internal hole to a diameter of ∅35 (+0.025/0); turn the outer diameter of the small end face to ∅55 (0/-0.02); and turn the small end face to ensure a small outer‑circle length of 31.
❽Car.
Top‑center clamping, precision turning: outer cylindrical surface and end face; ensure the outer diameter length is 19 (+0.02/0).
❾Pliers.
Marking: Draw three arc‑groove centerlines and three drill‑hole centerlines.
❿Milling.
Mill three arc-shaped grooves, 10 mm wide and 8 mm deep.
❶❶ Drill.
Drill 3 through-holes, Ø10, EQS.
